Cerita Tenggiling (Pangolin)

I met one last week, at my home. I believe it enters the compound after Subuh as we usually keep the gates closed at night. Maybe it lost the way to find her home. huhuhu.. There are many pangolin holes (or maybe iguana)  around the place we live, maybe because the place has plenty of food and convenient place to stay.

She tried to run away from me, not wanting her picture to be taken.. huhu

However, the last time I saw pangolins in the area was years back. It was a pair of them, hanging on branches of a rambutan tree. However, those pair were not as huge as the one that I just recently saw. I believe it felt  full and ready to find her bed, but couldn’t find it. Or maybe she was pregnant, and nearly due. She wanted to find a safe place to give her birth. How do I know it was a female? It was just my assumption. huhuhu

I was in rush, as I need to send my mom to her work before the road get crowded. I was not able to give much attention to that poor pangolin. I called Abah to give a hand on how we should handle her, maybe capture her to make our pet, along with the two arowanas. Then, we can call Majalah 3 to publish our story… huhuhu.. Then I left the pangolin to Abah and went to send Maa. By the time I went back home. The mission has already accomplished. Abah has  safely escorted the mammal out of the house compound. huhuhu

Wrong technique.. Only the back can touch the ground, not the head.. huhu

In Silat Gayong, there is a movement that is called Tenggiling (Pangolin). Same like other animals movement, it also has its own strength. It is a technique where one can prevent injury when falling down. It is the basic techniques that practitioners need to master as this will allow them to become competent in others higher technique as well. This is because practices in Gayong requires a lot of falling and small part of acrobatics movements (which i’m not good at T-T).

Forward roll- Tenggiling.. Taken from hafiz’s

Maybe the name of the movement is given based on pangolin’s nature which require practitioners to have a tough, round back when they do the rolling, same like the pangolin. This movement will protect the practioners’ week point especially the head. When ones have sufficient training, they will not have any problem, rolling on the hard surface or in the real situation. i.e in an accident. For higher level, ones will just do the somersault on air, which is more practical and less dirty, but hard to master. huhuhu

Hello! I am a painter in Loveland, CO, and tonight I was searching for an image of somersaulting, which I plan to use in a new painting. I found your blog and loved it! I just want you to know that you entertained (and enlightened) someone in cyberspace! The information about the Pangolin was very interesting and will give new meaning to my imagery in my painting.
